On September 24, 2021, the first meeting of the Coordinating Council on Climate Change, Ecology, and Green Economy Development was held.

At the meeting, chaired by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic        U.A. Maripov and Chair of the State Committee on Ecology and Climate D.A. Kutmanova, the document on the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of the Kyrgyz Republic under the Paris Agreement, which is the main agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) regulating the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, was considered and approved.

According to the updated NDC, in 2025 the Kyrgyz Republic will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 16.63% of the level of emissions under the “business as usual” scenario, and with international support by 36.61%. In 2030, the country intends to reduce emissions by 15.97% of the level of emissions under the “business as usual” scenario, and with international support by 43.62%.

Kyrgyzstan intends to increase its ambitions in mitigation by implementing:

– RES (solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, and small hydroelectric power plants),

– Transportation and electric mobility,

– Energy efficiency and gasification.

The following aspects are highlighted in the adaptation component:

– rehabilitation, strengthening and construction of water and energy infrastructure,

– promotion of climate technologies in the agricultural sector, – expansion of the monitoring network and reduction of damage from climate disasters.

The updated NDC will be officially presented at the COP26, which will be held from October 31 to November 12, 2021 in Glasgow, UK.
